NMFC updates go into effect April 8, 2023

We aim to share the most relevant information regarding your shipping & logistics operations. Here is the recently proposed FCDC (Freight Classification Development Council) changes to the current National Motor Freight Classification  (NMFC) codes in which all Less than a truck Load [ LTL ] freight is categorized.

These NMFC changes noted below are effective 04/08/2023.

• (New) NMFC 78400: Fume Hoods or Fume Hood Bases, laboratory, NOI. This new item will carry a standard eleven subdivision density scale for classification.
  • NMFC 79460, which carries the same heading, will be canceled as a result with all provisions moved to the new item.
• (New) NMFC 79300: Furniture or Furniture Parts, viz. Classification will be based on a standard eleven subdivision density scale.

• The entire Brooms Group is being canceled and relocated to a single NMFC item. Items being canceled and moved this new item are as follows:

  • As a result of this new item, NMFC’s 81570 and 188950 will be canceled with all provisions relocated to the new item.

• (New) NMFC 190270: EBikes or ETrikes (Electric Bicycles or Tricycles). Classifications will be determined by whether or not the battery is installed.

• (New) NMFC 197230: Wheels or Wheel Blanks, NOI. Classification for this new item will be determined by packaging and density.
  • The following will be canceled as a result of this new item, with all provisions relocated to the new item:
    • 197260, 197270, 197330, 197337, 197339, 197350, 197390, 197417, 197460, 197465, 197480, 197520, 197560, 197583, 197590, 197592, 197597.

• (New) NMFC 26820: Radiators, heating or cooling, NOI, or Unit Ventilators. Classification will be determined by greatest dimension and density.

• NMFC 36650: Guards, Screens or Covers, gutter, metal, etc. This item will be amended from the single class 65 rating to classifications based on greatest dimension and density.

• (New) NMFC 65300: Feeders, livestock or poultry, including Salt Holders, with or without conveyors or troughs. Classification will be determined by packaging and density.
  • The following items will be canceled as a result of this new item with all provisions relocated to the new item:
