Here is a summary of upcoming classification changes that will be effective on December 2, 2023.
Below is a summary of upcoming classification changes that will be effective on May 11, 2024. We continue to see common sense simplification. The Classification Reimagination project to simplify the NMFC the FCDC has undertaken shows results.
These changes originate from the FCDC (Freight Classification Development Council).

Foodstuffs Group
In keeping with recent changes to the Foodstuffs Group, several items will be canceled and moved to existing items.
Canceled with all provisions moved to NMFC 74700 naming Sauces, Condiments, Dips, Spreads or Butters, viz:
NMFC 72285 - Butters or Spreads, nut or seed, including Peanut Butter
NMFC 74620 – Salad Dressing Preparations, dry
Canceled with all provisions moved to NMFC 73150 naming Flour, Meal, Sugar or Related Articles, viz:
NMFC 74043 – Milk Sugar (Lactose), crude
NMFC 74045 – Milk Sugar (Lactose), refined
NMFC 75100 – Sweeteners, NOI, including Sugar Alcohols
NMFC 74580 (Rice, rough) will be canceled with all provisions moved to NMFC 89230 naming Grain or Grain Products, viz.
The following items are to be canceled with all provisions moved to NMFC 73260 naming Foodstuffs, other than frozen, viz:
72310, 72747, 72935, 72960, 72970, 73250, 73770, 73840, 73860, 73990, 74020, 74030, 74035, 74840
NMFC 72180 (Beverages or Foods, canned, jacketed by cans containing chemical heating element, etc.) will be canceled as obsolete.
Agricultural Implements, Other Than Hand Group
A lot of changes within this group. Numerous items are to be canceled with all provisions moved to existing items or to a newly created item. These changes will also move impacted items out of the Agricultural Implements group and into the Machinery Group.
(New) NMFC 114050 – Agricultural Implements, other than hand, or Parts Thereof, viz. Classification of this new item will be determined by packaging and density.

NMFC 10250 (Sprayers, field, self-propelled, straddle type) will be canceled with all provisions moved to NMFC 177680 naming Sprayers, NOI; Steam or Water Cleaning Outfits, separate or combined; or Snowmaking Machines, etc.
NMFC 10370 (Twine, baler or binder) will be canceled with all provisions moved to NMFC 53390 naming Cord, Cordage, Rope, other than wire rope, String or Twine, NOI.
Machinery Group
(New) NMFC 102700 – Conveyors, Elevators or Lifts, or Parts thereof, NOI. Classification of this new item will be determined by greatest dimension and density.
As a result of this new item, the following will be canceled with all provisions relocated to the new item:

(New) NMFC 186970 – Torches or Welders; or Parts thereof, NOI. Classification of this newly created item will be determined by the standard eleven subdivision density scale. Shipments required to bear hazardous materials placards will not be subject to this item.

Household Utensils Group
The following items will be canceled with all provisions relocated to the existing NMFC item 101425 naming Tools, hand, kitchen, other than power, viz:

NMFC 100760 (Crushers, ice, electric or hand operated). Provisions for hand operated articles, other than power, will be relocated to NMFC 101425. Provisions for power-operated articles will classify under NMFC 123150, naming Ice Crushing or Ice Shaving Machines.
Vehicle Parts Group
(New) NMFC 193100 – Vehicle Parts, viz. Classification of this new item will be determined by a standard eleven subdivision density scale.
As a result of this newly created item, the following will be canceled. All provisions of these canceled items will be relocated to NMFC 193100.:

Athletic Goods Group
NMFC 35032 (Materials or Panels, in-ground swimming pool construction, etc.) will be canceled and moved to NMFC 15520 naming Athletic or Sporting Goods, viz.
Coolers Group
Changes to items in this group also impact items within the Machinery Group.
NMFC 53190 (Water Coolers, NOI, with plastic or metal walls, insulated, etc.) will be canceled with all provisions relocated to the current NMFC 53025.
(New) NMFC 118230 – Coolers or Dispensers, beverage or water, with mechanical apparatus. This item will be contained within the Machinery Group. Classification will be determined by a three tier density scale with breaks at 7 PCF and 12 PCF.
NMFC 53220 (Water Coolers and Cooling or Freezing Apparatus combined, etc.) and NMFC 119610 (Dispensers, carbonated beverage (Soda Fountains) will be canceled and relocated to NMFC 118230.
NMFC 119620 (Dispensers or Urns, beverage or Syrup, NOI, etc.) will be canceled with provisions relocated to NMFC 118230 or 63825 (Exhibits, museum, Articles of Antiquity or Antiques). Please note the alternative item (NMFC 63825) is intended for antique syrup urns. Such as the ones shown in the picture below. All other articles subject to 118230 will be classified as such.
Electrical Equipment Group
(New) NMFC 62830 – Radio, Radiotelephone or Television Transmitting or Transmitting and Receiving Sets, or other Radio Impulse or Wireless Audio (Sound) Impulse Transmitting or Transmitting and Receiving Sets, including Cellular Telephones, separate or combined. Classification will be determined by two density-driven subdivisions.
As a result of this newly created item, NMFC items 62820 and 62850 will be canceled with all provisions relocated accordingly.
(Canceled) NMFC 63496 – Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS). All provisions of this item will be moved to NMFC 63160 naming Switches, Switch Boxes, Electrical Enclosures or Electrical Wiring Equipment.
Shucks (Husks)
NMFC 175740 – Shucks (Husks), corn. Classification of this item will be amended from the current single class 100 rating to a three tier density-driven rating. Density breaks will be at 6 PCF and 10 PCF.
Spill Containment Kits
NMFC 108140 – Kits, industrial spill containment, for acids, caustic substances or petroleum, etc. will be canceled with all provisions relocated to NMFC 108170 naming Kits, emergency, etc.
Boat Group
(Canceled) NMFC 24620 – Boat Construction Kits. All provisions will be moved to NMFC 24670 naming Boats or Boat Sections, viz.
Rope
(Canceled) NMFC 171240 – Rope, synthetic fiber, with or without wire center, plastic coated, etc. All provisions will be relocated to NMFC 53390 naming Cord, Cordage, Rope, other than wire rope, String or Twine, NOI.
Plastic or Rubber Articles Group
NMFC 156600 (Plastic Articles, viz.) will be amended to name “Liners, swimming pool or pond, plastic film or sheeting”. Item will remain unchanged otherwise.
Tube Caps
NMFC 40225 (Caps, Covers, Discs, Ends, etc.) will be amended to change “collapsible tubes” to “tubes”. Item will remain unchanged otherwise.
Stationary or Office Supplies
NMFC 179180 – Stationary or Office Supplies, viz. A note will be added to this item to clarify classification of fiberboard or paperboard boxes, and direct the reader to NMFC 29785 for class determination of said items.
