New NMFTA Classification Codes - Effective December 2, 2023
Here is a summary of upcoming classification changes that will be effective on December 2, 2023.
Please get with known shippers and advise them that these changes are coming. Be sure to note that these changes do not originate from the carriers but originate from the FCDC (Freight Classification Development Council).

Foodstuffs Group – Numerous items are to be canceled, with all provisions relocated to existing NMFC items.
All provisions canceled and moved to NMFC 73260:

(Canceled) NMFC 72080: Beans, cocoa, etc. and NMFC 72120: Beans, vanilla or Tahiti, etc. All provisions of these items will be moved to NMFC 77060.
(Canceled) NMFC 72220: Bread Making Compounds, NOI, etc. and NMFC 72490: Coating, doughnut or cake, dry, etc. All provisions of these items will be moved to NMFC 73150.
(Canceled) NMFC 74090: Molasses, dried (Powdered Molasses), etc. will be canceled with all provisions moved to NMFC 74095.
(Canceled) NMFC 72810: Dressings or Stuffing, bread base, with or without ingredients, dry; or Bread Crumbs; Bread Cubes or Croutons; Cracker or Matzo Meal, etc. will be canceled with all provisions split between NMFC’s 73150 and 73260
(Canceled) NMFC 73820: Malt Extract, other than liquid, Malt Powder (Dehydrated Malt Syrup), or Maltose (Malt Sugar), etc. will be canceled with all provisions split between NMFC’s 73150, 73260, and 74095.
(Canceled) NMFC 74000: Milk, Cream or Vegetable Oil Compounds (Dessert Toppings, aerated, etc. will be canceled with all provisions split between NMFC’s 73260 and 85880.
Wallboard Group – The entire Wallboard Group will be canceled and replaced with a new NMFC item encompassing numerous canceled items.
(New) NMFC 193700: Wallboard, Building Board or Building Insulation Board, in panels, NOI, including Ceiling Tiles. This new item will be classified based on greatest dimension and density.

Floor Or Wall Coverings And Related Articles Group
(New) NMFC 70965: Mats, Matting or Tiles, floor, rubber. Classification of this new item will be based on packaging and density.
As a result of this new item, NMFC 70960: Mats, floor, etc. will be canceled with all provisions relocated to the new item.
Boilers, Furnaces, Stoves And Related Articles Group
(New) NMFC 26510: Heaters, water, tank type. Classification of this new item will be determined by packaging and density.
As a result of this new item, NMFC 26520: Heaters, water, tank type, etc. will be canceled with all provisions relocated to the new item.
(New) NMFC 26630: Incinerators, garbage, offal or rubbish, NOI. This new item will carry a single class 70 rating.
(Canceled) NMFC 26600: Incinerators, garbage, offal or rubbish, steel, lined with refractory material, etc. NMFC 26620: Incinerators, garbage or offal, NOI, etc. These items will be canceled with all provisions relocated to NMFC 26630.
Barrels Group – The entire Barrels Group will be canceled and replaced with a new NMFC item encompassing numerous canceled items.
(New) NMFC 59500: Drums, Pails or Tubs, shipping, NOI; or Barrels, Casks or Kegs, NOI. Classification will be determined by the standard eleven subdivision density scale.
Canceled with all provisions relocated to the new NMFC item:
21740, 21760, 21780, 21810, 21810, 21860
As a result of this new item, provisions naming Barrels, Drums or Kegs, NOI, shipping will be removed from NMFC 174610.
Washers; Gaskets; Or Packing Devices, Forms Or Shapes, Other Than Packaging – This entire group will be canceled with all provisions relocated to NMFC 194120.

Grain Group – As a result of previously canceled items and canceled items in this docket, the entire Grain Group will be canceled.

(New) NMFC 79250: Chairs, electric or mechanical, with or without hydraulic or power-operated bases, viz. This new item will have three subdivisions for classification based on density.

Safes Or Safe Or Vault Parts, Fire or Burglar Proof – This entire group will be canceled with numerous items relocated to a newly created item.

Furniture Group

(Canceled) NMFC 154555: Paper or Paperboard, synthetic fiber. This item will be canceled with all provisions relocated to NMFC 156600.
Hazardous Materials
NMF100 item 540 will be amended for empty shipping packages containing the residue of hazardous materials so as to be in compliance with hazardous materials regulations.
Definition Of Or Specifications For Crates
NMF100 item 245 will be amended to provide clearer construction requirements for crates.
